Artist Statement
Currently at EMERGE (artist residency), I am a ceramic sculptural artist. With a natural tangible connection to working in clay, my pieces follow an exploration into the boundless possibilities and manipulation of this versatile material and the continually evolving connections formed between my expanding catalogue of work.
Working with clay allows and offers a sensory, physically challenging and kinaesthetic experience. It is a material that records action, touch and emotions as it is manipulated into its final form. My work reflects an intentional reliance on the repetitive motion of forming the clay, the extrusion of long coils meticulously measured and cut in preparation for each link of the chains, which serve as a common connection between different vessels and installations. The creative concept is focussed on using predominantly one type of earthenware clay body which depends on meticulously managed different firing temperatures and kiln atmospheres, to alter the body colour of the sculptural pieces.
